Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Hydrogeological Survey Specialist to join our dynamic team in Soma, The Gambia. This pivotal role focuses on conducting comprehensive hydrogeological investigations, groundwater resource assessments, and aquifer characterization studies to support sustainable water resource development and management across The Gambia. Key Responsibilities
- Plan, design, and execute hydrogeological field investigations, including drilling supervision, aquifer testing, and groundwater sampling.
- Conduct geophysical surveys (e.g., electrical resistivity tomography, seismic refraction) to delineate subsurface geology and aquifer geometry.
- Analyze and interpret hydrogeological data to assess groundwater availability, quality, vulnerability, and sustainable yield.
- Develop and calibrate numerical groundwater flow and transport models using software such as MODFLOW, FEFLOW, or Groundwater Vistas.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, maps, and conceptual site models for clients and regulatory authorities.
- Provide expert input into Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) related to water resources.
- Design and implement groundwater monitoring networks and data management systems.
- Collaborate with project managers and clients to define project scopes, budgets, and timelines.
- Mentor junior staff and field technicians in hydrogeological survey methodologies.
- Stay abreast of technological advancements in hydrogeology and geophysical investigation techniques.
Required Skills
- Expert proficiency in hydrogeological field investigation techniques and aquifer test analysis.
- Advanced skills in groundwater modeling software (MODFLOW, MT3DMS, FEFLOW) and geostatistical analysis.
- Strong competency in processing and interpreting geophysical survey data.
- Proficiency with GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS) and spatial data analysis for hydrogeology.
- Excellent technical report writing and data visualization abilities.
- Strong project management and client liaison skills.
- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and in remote field conditions.
- In-depth understanding of The Gambia’s hydrogeological setting and water resource challenges is a significant advantage.
Education
A Master’s degree or PhD in Hydrogeology, Geological Engineering, Environmental Science with a focus on groundwater, or a directly related field is required. Professional registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) or equivalent is highly desirable. Continuous professional development in areas such as advanced groundwater modeling, remote sensing applications in hydrology, or climate-resilient water management will be considered an asset.
Experience
A minimum of 5 to 8 years of progressive professional experience in applied hydrogeology, with a proven track record in leading hydrogeological survey projects. Experience must include significant field work in data collection, aquifer testing, and the development of groundwater models for resource evaluation or contamination studies. Prior experience working on international development projects, particularly in West Africa, and familiarity with the funding procedures of major development banks (World Bank, AfDB) is highly advantageous. Working Environment
