Job Overview
The Mining Operations Safety Manager will lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety programs at the Kunta Kalle mine. Reporting directly to the Site General Manager, you will be responsible for creating a zero‑incident culture, ensuring compliance with local regulations, international standards such as ISO 45001, and Rio Tinto’s internal safety policies. You will collaborate with engineering, production, and community liaison teams to integrate safety considerations into every operational decision. This role is pivotal in conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits, while also delivering training and mentorship to frontline supervisors and workers. By fostering proactive hazard identification and mitigation, you will help protect our most valuable asset – our people – and support the long‑term sustainability of the mine.

Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive safety management systems aligned with ISO 45001 and local mining regulations.
- Conduct regular site inspections, hazard analyses, and risk assessments to identify potential safety issues.
- Lead incident investigations, root‑cause analysis, and corrective action implementation to prevent recurrence.
- Provide safety training, coaching, and mentorship to supervisors, contractors, and field personnel.
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to integrate safety controls into equipment design and operational procedures.
- Prepare and present safety performance reports to senior management and external regulators.
- Manage emergency response plans, drills, and coordination with local emergency services.
- Promote a culture of safety through communication campaigns, toolbox talks, and employee engagement initiatives.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of mining safety regulations in The Gambia and international best practices.
- Proven experience in conducting risk assessments, audits, and incident investigations.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to influence and drive behavioral change across diverse workforces.
- Proficiency with safety management software and data analytics tools.
- Fluency in English; knowledge of local languages is an advantage.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or NEBOSH are highly desirable and will be considered an asset during the selection process.
Experience
Minimum of five years’ experience in safety management within the mining or heavy‑industry sector, with a demonstrated track record of reducing incident rates and implementing effective safety programs. Experience working in West Africa or similar emerging market environments is preferred.
Salary
The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary ranging from 150,000 to 250,000 SSP per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. A performance‑based bonus structure is also available.
