Job Overview

The Health & Safety Officer will be responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring occupational health and safety programs across Bureau Veritas client sites in Gambia. Reporting to the Regional Health & Safety Manager, the incumbent will conduct risk assessments, lead safety audits, provide training, and ensure compliance with local regulations and international standards such as ISO 45001. The role is pivotal in fostering a zero‑incident culture, advising clients on best practices, and supporting the delivery of high‑quality inspection services. This position directly contributes to Bureau Veritas’ mission of safeguarding people, assets and the environment, making it an essential component of the company’s service portfolio in the region.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive workplace risk assessments and hazard analyses for client facilities.
• Develop and update health and safety policies, procedures and emergency response plans in line with Gambian legislation and ISO 45001.
• Lead internal and external safety audits, prepare detailed reports, and track corrective actions.
• Provide on‑site safety training, toolbox talks and awareness sessions for client staff and Bureau Veritas personnel.
• Monitor incident reports, investigate accidents, and recommend preventive measures.
• Collaborate with engineering, operations and quality teams to integrate safety considerations into project planning.
• Maintain accurate safety documentation, registers and compliance records.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory inspections and liaise with Gambian authorities.
• Promote a culture of continuous improvement through safety performance metrics and benchmarking.
• Support business development by contributing safety expertise to proposals and client presentations.

Required Skills

• Strong knowledge of Gambian occupational health and safety regulations and international standards.
• Excellent analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
• Effective communication skills in English; proficiency in local languages is an advantage.
• Ability to conduct training sessions and present complex information clearly.
• Proficiency with safety management software and Microsoft Office suite.
• Detail‑oriented with strong organizational and documentation skills.
• Team player with the capacity to work independently in diverse environments.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering or a related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH or CSP are highly desirable and will be considered an asset during the selection process.

Experience

Candidates should possess 3‑5 years of hands‑on experience in occupational health and safety, preferably within manufacturing, construction or industrial service sectors. Experience conducting safety audits, risk assessments and delivering training programs is essential. Prior exposure to international standards and working with multinational clients will be advantageous.

Salary

The successful applicant will receive a competitive monthly salary ranging from 150,000 to 250,000 SSP, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Salary reviews are conducted annually, and performance‑based incentives may be offered.
