Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Hydrographic Survey Technician to join our dynamic marine survey team based in Barra, Gambia. This role is central to our maritime operations, involving the collection, processing, and management of precise hydrographic data essential for coastal engineering, dredging operations, and maritime infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will operate state-of-the-art survey equipment aboard survey vessels, ensuring the accurate mapping of seafloor topography, sub-bottom profiles, and water column characteristics. Key Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain a variety of hydrographic survey systems, including multibeam echosounders, side-scan sonar, single-beam sounders, and GNSS positioning equipment.
• Plan and execute hydrographic survey missions from mobilization through data acquisition to demobilization, adhering to project specifications and safety protocols.
• Process, analyze, and validate acquired hydrographic data using specialized software (e.g., QPS Qimera, Teledyne CARIS, Hypack) to produce charts, maps, and digital terrain models.
• Prepare comprehensive technical reports and data deliverables that meet international standards (IHO S-44) and client requirements.
• Perform routine calibration, testing, and troubleshooting of survey sensors and equipment to ensure optimal performance and data accuracy.
• Work closely with vessel crew, project managers, and data processors to ensure efficient survey operations and timely delivery of project milestones.
• Adhere strictly to Fugro’s and client-specific Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) policies at all times, both onshore and offshore.
• Support the training and mentoring of junior survey personnel and local staff, fostering skill development within the team.

Required Skills

• Proficiency in operating hydrographic survey equipment and software suites.
• Strong understanding of geodesy, tidal analysis, and positioning systems (RTK, PPK).
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Competence in data processing, quality control, and technical report writing.
• Physical fitness and ability to work offshore on survey vessels for extended periods, sometimes in challenging conditions.
• Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and data integrity.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Geomatics, Hydrographic Surveying, Oceanography, Geophysics, or a closely related engineering field is required. Certification or recognized training in hydrographic surveying (e.g., from the International Hydrographic Organization Category B or similar) is a significant advantage. Ongoing professional development in emerging survey technologies is encouraged and supported.

Experience

A minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience in marine hydrographic surveying is essential. Candidates must have proven experience with multibeam and side-scan sonar operations, data processing, and deliverable preparation. Experience working on coastal engineering, dredging, or offshore survey projects, particularly in West Africa, will be highly regarded. Familiarity with project management principles and client liaison is beneficial.
