Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Agronomist to join our research and development team in Brikama. This role is critical to our mission of driving agricultural productivity in The Gambia. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and implementing field trials, analyzing crop performance, and providing technical guidance to local farming communities. You will play a pivotal role in testing new seed varieties and crop protection products to ensure they are suitable for the specific soil and climatic conditions of the Gambian landscape.
This position requires a blend of scientific rigor and practical field experience. You will work closely with our regional technical teams to translate complex data into actionable insights for farmers. Key Responsibilities
- Design, manage, and execute large-scale field trials to evaluate new crop varieties and chemical treatments.
- Collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data from field experiments to assess crop health and yield.
- Develop technical training programs for local farmers and agricultural extension officers.
- Collaborate with the regional R&D team to adapt global technologies to local Gambian soil types.
- Monitor local pest and disease trends to provide early warning signals to the community.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports for senior management and regulatory bodies.
Required Skills
- Advanced expertise in plant pathology, soil science, and crop physiology.
- Proficiency in statistical software and data analysis tools for agricultural research.
- Strong communication skills to interact with both scientists and local farmers.
- Exceptional problem-solving abilities in a field-based environment.
- Deep understanding of West African agricultural practices and seasonal cycles.
Education
A Master’s degree in Agronomy, Plant Science, Soil Science, or a closely related agricultural field is mandatory. A PhD is highly preferred for candidates looking to lead advanced research initiatives.
Experience
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in field research or agronomic consulting is required. Proven experience working in sub-Saharan Africa or similar tropical climates is a significant advantage.
Salary
The monthly salary for this position ranges from 45,000 SSP to 65,000 SSP, depending on experience and qualifications.
