Job Overview

The Lead Environmental Compliance Officer will spearhead the development, implementation, and monitoring of environmental policies and procedures to ensure full compliance with local, regional, and international regulations. Reporting directly to the Regional Head of Sustainability, you will coordinate cross‑functional teams, manage permitting processes, and serve as the primary liaison with regulatory authorities. Key Responsibilities

• Develop, review, and update environmental compliance frameworks aligned with Gambian legislation and Shell’s Global Standards.
• Lead the preparation, submission, and renewal of environmental permits, licenses, and impact assessments.
• Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and monitoring activities to verify adherence to environmental controls.
• Prepare comprehensive compliance reports for senior management and external regulators.
• Coordinate incident investigations, root‑cause analyses, and corrective action plans for any environmental breaches.
• Provide technical guidance and training to operational teams on best practices for waste management, emissions control, and biodiversity protection.
• Maintain an up‑to‑date database of regulatory changes and ensure timely implementation of new requirements.
• Collaborate with community liaison officers to address stakeholder concerns and promote transparent communication.

Required Skills

• In‑depth knowledge of Gambian environmental laws, ISO 14001, and industry‑specific standards.
• Strong analytical abilities with proficiency in environmental data management tools.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report drafting and stakeholder engagement.
• Project management expertise, including budgeting, scheduling, and risk assessment.
• Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and influence senior leadership.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and environmental monitoring software.

Education

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related field is required. Candidates holding a Master’s degree or professional certifications such as Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) will be given preference.

Experience

Applicants must possess at least five years of hands‑on experience in environmental compliance within the oil & gas, energy, or heavy‑industry sectors. Demonstrated experience in managing large‑scale permitting processes, conducting environmental impact assessments, and leading audit programs is essential.

Salary

The compensation package ranges from SSP 150,000 to SSP 250,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Salary is complemented by performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, and a comprehensive retirement plan.
