Job Overview

This role is part of Tetra Tech’s mission to transform waste management practices in Gambia. The Waste Management Specialist will design and implement sustainable waste collection, recycling, and disposal systems tailored to Soma’s unique environmental and urban challenges. The position requires collaboration with local authorities, community stakeholders, and international partners to ensure compliance with global environmental standards while addressing local needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute waste management strategies for residential, commercial, and industrial sectors
  • Conduct waste audits and feasibility studies for new waste treatment facilities
  • Design public awareness campaigns to promote waste segregation and recycling
  • Coordinate with municipal authorities to optimize waste collection routes and schedules
  • Monitor compliance with national and international environmental regulations
  • Evaluate emerging waste-to-energy technologies for potential implementation

Required Skills

  • Proven expertise in municipal solid waste management systems
  • Knowledge of environmental impact assessment methodologies
  • Proficiency in GIS mapping for waste site analysis
  • Strong project management and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Ability to interpret environmental regulations and sustainability frameworks
  • Experience with waste treatment technologies (e.g., composting, anaerobic digestion)

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, or Public Health. Advanced certification in Waste Management or Environmental Compliance is preferred.

Experience

3-5 years of experience in municipal waste management projects, with at least one project in West Africa. Experience working with international NGOs or government environmental agencies is advantageous.

Salary

150,000 – 180,000 Dalasi per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
